Bay Planning Coalition’s climate resilience advocacy paid off this month as the California Legislature passed a state budget with historic investments in climate adaptation projects and the State Assembly passed a crucial bill to advance regional climate adaptation planning. On Monday, California lawmakers and Governor Newsom agreed on a budget that included $3.7 billion over three years to make key climate resiliency investments, which is $2.4 billion more than what was proposed in the Governor’s May Revision. BPC has been working with a broad coalition to advocate for a significant increase in funding to conduct climate adaptation planning and implementation to protect California communities and infrastructure from the impacts of climate change. On Monday the Senate Environmental Quality Committee also passed an important piece of legislation — AB 897 (Mullin) — designed to facilitate regional climate adaptation planning to implement a comprehensive approach to combatting sea level rise and adapting to other climate threats. The revised budget and this bill together will provide the necessary resources to speed up planning and implementation of necessary climate adaptation projects around the region and state.
