On Thursday, October 10th, the Bay Planning Coalition brought together industry experts, regulators, and key stakeholders for the 2024 Dredging and Beneficial Reuse Workshop, where we explored the latest developments and policies shaping the industry. This year’s workshop featured three main segments:
Regulatory Updates: The first panel discussed regulatory developments and considerations related to dredging and sediment management, including the Sediment for Wetland Adaptation Project (SWAP), the Bay Regional Monitoring Program (RMP) Sediment Workgroup’s efforts and future goals, and an update on the longfin smelt listing.
Beneficial Reuse Updates: The second panel offered insights into the Bel Marin Keys Restoration project and lessons learned from the Hamilton Wetlands Restoration project. As the region pushes to maximize the beneficial use of dredged sediments, this segment featured the Regional Water Board’s perspective on beneficial use to advance restoration and resilience.
Industry Perspective on Dredging Operations and Contracting: The third panel segment featured dredging contractors and solicitors to share their perspectives on the complexities of dredging operations in the Bay. The discussion also explored the science behind dredging, the cost factors involved, the operational challenges faced, and the contracting strategies employed.
To conclude the event, we were honored to welcome Tommy Williams, Deputy District Engineer for Programs, Planning, and Project Management at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers San Francisco District. Tommy provided valuable insights into the Corps’ beneficial use objectives and the District’s current priorities.
We extend our sincere thanks to all the sponsors, speakers, and attendees for their engagement and support in making this year’s workshop a success.
