AQPI Radar Collecting Important Data During February Atmospheric River Storms

As February’s atmospheric rivers continue to batter the Bay Area, two new X-band radars are capturing and analyzing precipitation data for use by the National Weather Service and others.  The two radars are the building blocks for the Advanced Quantitative Precipitation Information system, a precipitation, runoff, and coastal flood monitoring and modeling system under development by NOAA, the Department of Water Resources, Sonoma Water and several other agencies. BPC is actively leading the stakeholder outreach on behalf of the AQPI team, as widespread adoption of this new radar will help build resiliency in the Bay Area.  The AQPI team is working closely with our partner water agencies to incorporate these radar and additional geographic and precipitation data into their models so the region can better prepare for the impact of future storms.
