Vital Signs Releases New Data Highlighting Growth in
Congestion and a Shift Away From the Automobile
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) today released nine updated performance indicators related to transportation in the San Francisco Bay Area, based in part on recently released 2014 data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. The Vital Signs release shows an overall rise in traffic congestion as a result of strong economic conditions, featuring new interactive maps that provide additional detail on congested hot spots across the region. In addition, new data on commute mode choices and commute times demonstrate, for the first time in decades, a statistically significant shift away from driving and toward alternative modes like public transit, walking and bicycling. Finally, the Vital Signs update includes an all-new homepage that better highlights the latest findings and responds to feedback we heard from power users.

An interactive regional map of freeway congestion and average speeds allows Vital Signs users to pull up key statistics on commute corridors. Hyperlocal commuting maps show the share of residents in individual neighborhoods that drive, walk, bike or take public transit to get to work each day.
The following transportation indicators were updated as part of this month’s data release: | Commute Mode Choice | Commute Time | Traffic Volumes at Regional Gateways | Time Spent in Congestion | Miles Traveled in Congestion | Travel Time Reliability | Transit Ridership | Transit System Efficiency | Daily Miles Traveled
