PORT OF PORTLAND PARTNERS WITH COLUMBIA RIVER PORTS TO RETURN CONTAINER SERVICE TO PORT OF LEWISTON
|
Container service in Lewiston had been stopped for the past eight months since shipping companies Hapag-Lloyd and Hanjin pulled out due to labor issues at Port of Portland’s Terminal 6, operated by ICTSI. The Port of Portland is helping subsidize the project, which officials estimate will become economically sustainable next month.
Containers are loaded on barges in Lewiston and unloaded at the Port of Morrow, Oregon. They are then transferred by rail through Portland to Seattle or Tacoma before being loaded onto ships for export. The new system reduces highway congestion and saves roughly $300 per container verses trucking to the Puget Sound.
Kudos, Ports of Portland, Lewiston, and Morrow for working together for this unique solution!
