Infographic: Will El Niño End California’s Drought?

The stage is set for a strong El Niño event this winter, but experts are cautioning that heavy rain and even flooding in some parts of the state will not necessarily end California’s four-year drought.

While there is no single factor that will determine when the drought ends, water managers and other experts will be watching several factors for signs of improvement.

Assembly Hearing Examines Water Consumption and Alternative Sources

Water experts today briefed California lawmakers on the impacts of climate change on water availability and pricing, and provided an overview of alternative methods to bolster water supply reliability.

The testimony was part of an informational hearing of the Assembly Select Committee on Water Consumption and Alternative Sources and was chaired by Assembly Member Richard Gordon, D-Menlo Park.

Senate Committee Hearing Focuses on Chronically Underfunded Water Needs

California suffers from an estimated $2 billion to $3 billion a year in chronically underfunded water needs in areas such as groundwater recharge, stormwater management, aging infrastructure and safe drinking water in some disadvantaged communities.

That was the takeaway from an informational hearing of the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee today where stakeholders from several sectors of the water community outlined the areas under their purview that chronically lack funding.

DWR Implements New Groundwater Basin Boundary Regulations

The California Department of Water Resources today implemented new groundwater basin boundary regulations, a key provision of the state’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Act.

Brown Issues Executive Order Intensifying State’s Drought Response

Gov. Jerry Brown today issued an executive order that intensifies the state’s drought response by extending emergency conservation regulations through October 2016 if drought persists through January, and allowing for the streamlining of permitting for projects that seek to capture stormwater from high precipitation events.
