The Desert Water Agency (DWA) today announced that its customers cut back on water use by almost 11% during September of this year compared with the same month last year, indicating that the agency’s conservation programs are working.
The reduction was revealed when the district released its water production data for the month of September. Emergency regulations for conservation enacted in July by the State Water Resources Control Board require urban water agencies to submit monthly water production reports to the State Board.

At an event on Tuesday to promote the new Salton Sea license plate, Assembly Member Brian Nestande (R-Palm Desert) proposed a new plan for a quarter-cent sales tax increase to establish a local funding stream for Salton Sea restoration efforts. Restoration of the Salton Sea is estimated at $8.9 billion.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s (MWD) Board of Directors today approved increases to financial incentives offered through its Local Resources Program, which aims to reduce the region’s reliance on imported water and improve water reliability for Southern California.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti today issued an executive order requiring the city to achieve a 20% reduction in potable water use by 2017, a 50% reduction in water purchases by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) by 2024, and the creation of an integrated water strategy to increase water supply and improve water security.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) today reported that despite extreme temperatures in August its customers cut water use by 8.8% compared to last year at the same time.
“Seeing these savings in the middle of summer during a drought is telling of L.A. residents’ commitment to water conservation, and we are grateful to all who continue to do their part,” said LADWP General Manager Marcie Edwards.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is now soliciting for water conservation project proposals from Colorado River entitlement holders in Arizona, California, and Nevada as part of a new Colorado River System Conservation pilot program. The program is a collaborative effort between the Bureau and the Central Arizona Project, Denver Water, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and Southern Nevada Water Authority.

2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the State Water Resources Control Board’s (SWRCB) landmark Decision 1631 to amend the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s water rights to protect Mono Lake and its tributary creeks. The decision was the first in the state’s history to integrate the Water Code, Fish and Game Code, and the common law of public trust, to achieve such a result.
