Earlier this fall, Bay Planning Coalition’s Board of Directors and Legislative & Policy Committee advised BPC on establishing positions on four critical state and local measures, which voters ultimately voiced their opinion on in last week’s election. We are happy to report that California and Bay Area residents have voted in accordance with all of our positions:

NO on Prop 53: This proposition, if passed, would’ve required any revenue bonds above $2 billion to be voted on by the entire state. Prop 53 would have compromised local control of community infrastructure projects and would have thwarted the state’s capability to repair and replace old, unsafe infrastructure.

NO on Prop 65: Proposition 65 would have dedicated revenue from the sale of carry-out bags by grocery stores to a Wildlife Conservation Fund Initiative. The catch: if both Prop 65 and Prop 67 were both passed, Prop 65 may have superseded Prop 67.

YES on Prop 67: The approval of Prop 67 bans retail and groceries stores from providing and selling single-use plastic and paper bags.

YES on Measure RR: Measure RR, a $3.5 billion general obligation bond, has been passed in order to fund improvements to the BART network. The bond would fund various system improvements, including the renovation of aged equipment to meet the demands of growing projected daily ridership, and to keep BART safe and reliable.

BPC’s Legislative & Policy Committee meets every quarter to discuss the region’s latest policy recommendations and actions in order to keep its members informed. Learn more about the Committee and how you can get involved by clicking here.
