STOCKTON RECORD EDITORIAL: VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 53
Even proponent’s hometown paper joins nearly every other newspaper in the State in opposing destructive measure
SACRAMENTO – The Stockton Record, the hometown newspaper of Proposition 53 proponent Dino Cortopassi, is urging its readers to vote no on the statewide ballot measure on the November ballot that attacks local control and contains no exemptions for natural disasters and emergencies.
“Vote no,” notes the editorial. “While Cortopassi has some good intentions with this proposition and spending must be controlled, the $2 billion threshold for a public vote is restrictive.”
Cortopassi, a Stockton multi-millionaire, has spent more than $4.5 million bankrolling Proposition 53 in an attempt to disrupt a single water infrastructure project. However, as the Record points out, the measure would negatively impact many other projects throughout the state.
The Record joins the state’s other major newspapers in opposing Proposition 53. They include: The Los Angeles Times, Sacramento Bee, San Diego Union-Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury News, East Bay Times, Bakersfield Californian, Santa Rosa Press Democrat, Santa Cruz Sentinel, Ventura County Star, La Opinion, and the Monterey Herald in opposing Prop 53.
More than 300 organizations across the state representing local government, public safety, water, business, labor, agriculture, and educators also are opposing Prop 53.
