MWD Provides Update on Water Supply Conditions

Officials with the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California presented an update on regional water supplies Monday, praising conservation and local water development and stating that the district expects to meet Southern California’s imported water needs even with an uncertain storm season ahead.

Officials also cautioned that the state is still in drought, but not at the emergency level it once was.

Comment Period Extended on Proposed Flow Changes for San Joaquin River

The State Water Resources Control Board has announced it has extended the written comment period on its draft proposal to increase unimpaired flows for fish species in the San Joaquin River. The State Water Board also is planning additional public hearings on the proposal.

The period for submitting written comments on the proposal, technically known as the draft revised Substitute Environmental Document, has been extended to noon, Jan. 17, 2017. The deadline had been Nov. 15.

Workshops Explore Feasibility of Direct Potable Recycled Water

The State Water Resources Control Board held two workshops on October 4 in Los Angeles and October 6 in Sacramento  to provide information and solicit public input on a draft report to the Legislature on the feasibility of developing regulations for the direct potable reuse of recycled water.

WY 2017 Kicks Off with 4.9 Million Acre-Feet in Storage for CVP

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s Central Valley Project began water year 2017 on Oct. 1 with 4.9 million acre-feet of water in its six key reservoirs. The amount is 2 million acre-feet more than was in storage at the beginning of water year 2016, federal officials announced today.

The amount of storage in the key reservoirs – Shasta, Trinity, Folsom, New Melones and Millerton reservoirs and the federal share of the joint federal/state San Luis Reservoir –  is 82% of the 15-year average of annual carryover of 6.0 million acre-feet.

Applications Being Accepted for WEF 2017 Water Leaders Class

Applications are now being accepted for the Water Education Foundation’s 2017 William R. Gianelli Water Leaders Class. The one-year program fosters a deeper knowledge of water issues and leadership skills.

Sponsored by the Water Education Foundation, this field trip covers the Sacramento River and its tributaries. All together, they supply 35% of California’s water and feed into two major projects: The State Water Project and the federal Central Valley Project.

This 3-day, 2-night tour travels across a scenic landscape as it follows the Sacramento River north from Sacramento through Chico to Redding and Lake Shasta, where participants take a houseboat ride.

Briefing on Drought Impacts to the Delta

Presented by the Water Education Foundation, this tour snakes along one of the nation’s largest and most expensive river restoration plans.

The San Joaquin River was the focus of one of the most contentious legal battles in California water history, ending in a 2006 settlement between the federal government, Friant Water Users Authority and a coalition of environmental groups.
