golden gate bayStill not convinced that the sea is rising? Well check out the article, Rising Reality, by the acclaimed San Francisco Chronicle Urban Design Critic, John King. This special report takes a very real, and very fair, look at the issue of sea level rise in the Bay Area. It is easy to read with great visuals and is full of stunning information that is likely relevant to an area near you.

As discussed in the article, the passing of Measure AA is CRITICAL if we are going to have any chance of protecting our shoreline. It will raise $500 million over 20 years to help adapt the shoreline to these new conditions and protect our valuable infrastructure, communities, and recreational environments. And it is only going to cost $12 a year per parcel of land in the Bay Area. That is 3 cents a day to save our beloved and world famous community.

But securing the funding is only part of the equation. We also need mud, and lots of it! There is a lack of sediment due to extensive damming and redirecting of streams away from the Bay. Measure AA is going to help get mud and sediment as well, by helping to fund the beneficial use of dredged sediment. The Federal Standard for the US Corps of Engineers is to take sediment to the ocean and dump it, which is essentially wasting it when it could be used to help build shorelines. BPC, BCDC (San Francisco Bay Conservation & Development Commission), The Coastal Conservancy, Save The Bay, and the Bay Institute are key organizations in proposing new WRDA legislation to the House and Senate that will require the Corps to take their dredged sediment to beneficial reuse sites. Just another reason why Measure AA is absolutely critical to making our shores resilient to changing seas.

Vote for Measure AA and stay tuned for updates on the WRDA Legislation!
