A deluge (of information) in a drought

The coming days and months will witness the release of a flood of science-based reports, representing collaborative science and major leadership from SFEI. This fall, the reports include the State of the Estuary Report,  the Pulse of the Bay, and the Baylands Ecosystem Habitat Goals Update 2015. In early 2016, we’ll see the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan and the State of the Bay-Delta Science report.  Making these reports count and engaging with decision-makers is my mission.

As these reports reveal, the health of the San Francisco Bay and Delta is severely challenged by the loss of natural habitat and removal of physical processes that create and sustain habitats. Climate change, drought, and sea level rise will compound this challenge and profoundly impact the economy and lives of 7.5 million people who live near the San Francisco Bay and Delta Estuary.  In these reports, over 150 scientists have assessed the estuary’s health, its waters, wetland and wildlife.  Some have predicted the future for these resources and the science needed to make our communities more resilient to rising tides and climate change.

Join me in helping to spread the word about the significant findings in these reports. The upcoming State of the Estuary Conference and RMP Annual Meeting on September 17th and 18th in Oakland offer an opportune time to network, plug in, and learn more about the details of our estuary and its outlook.

Sincerely,

Warner Chabot
Executive Director
