Final Shoreline Study environmental document posted; comments taken until Oct. 26

The final Shoreline Study document, which sets out plans for levees, wetlands and trails in the Alviso area of San Jose, is now available.

The document is an integrated feasibility study and environmental impact statement/report. It can be reviewed or downloaded at
http://www.spn.usace.army.mil/Library/FreedomofInformationAct/FOIAHotTopics.aspx.

There is a 31-day comment period on the final document, until close of business Monday, Oct. 26. For information or to provide comments, contact William DeJager at the Army Corps of Engineers at William.R.DeJager@usace.army.mil.

The Shoreline Study would provide protection from coastal flooding via levees and restored Bay wetlands on about 3,000 acres of former salt ponds. It would also provide recreational trails. It is a partnership between the Santa Clara Valley Water District, the State Coastal Conservancy and the US Army Corps of Engineers, with landowning partners the US Fish & Wildlife Service and the City of San José.

If Congress authorizes and appropriates funds for the project, construction could start as early as 2017.

For more information about the role that wetlands restoration can provide in protecting Bay communities from sea level rise and storm surges, see a new mini-documentary, The Water at Bay, produced by Our Bay on the Brink:
