ACWA Spring Conference & Exhibition Underway in Monterey

California’s drought and sustainable groundwater management are front-and-center topics this week as water leaders from throughout California meet at ACWA’s 2014 Spring Conference & Exhibition now underway in Monterey through Friday.

More than 1,700 local and state water leaders are gathered at the Monterey Conference Center and surrounding hotels and will attend an array of panel discussions, forums, presentations and keynote addresses as part of the four-day event, themed “Running on Empty: Investing to Move the Needle.”

The Department of Water Resources (DWR) on Monday announced numerous events this month that will underscore the need for water conservation and highlight May as “Save Our Water” month as commemorated by Gov. Jerry Brown May 1.

Report Outlines Recommendations for Sustainable Groundwater Management in California

The California Water Foundation (CWF) released a new report Monday, May 5, that lays out a framework for sustainably managing groundwater.

To develop its findings and recommendations, the independent organization convened participants from local water agencies that are active in ACWA, farmers, local elected officials, and others. The dialog began earlier this year at the governor’s request, the foundation said.

Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday commemorated May as Save Our Water month and reiterated his call to the public to conserve water while the state is “in the throes of a drought.”

Sierra Comes Up Dry in Season’s Last Snow Survey

The last snow survey of the 2014 water year had no surprises. There isn’t much snow left to help replenish the state’s low reservoirs.

The statewide snowpack’s water content is at just 18% of average for May 1, according to electronic readings and a manual survey done by Department of Water Resources snow surveyors on Thursday.

House Natural Resources Committee Votes to Approve Four Bills Related to the Endangered Species Act

On Wednesday, the House Natural Resources Committee voted to approve four bills that would bring about changes to the Endangered Species Act. The first bill, H.R. 4315, The 21st Century Endangered Species Transparency Act (Hastings R-WA), would require that data used by Federal Agencies for ESA listing decisions be made publicly available through the internet. The bill passed out of committee on a vote of 17-15.

ACWA President Issues Statement on Importance of Prioritizing Water for the California Economy

MONTEREY –John A. Coleman, president of the statewide Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA), issued the following statement today on California’s ongoing drought and the importance of providing water to the state’s economy, particularly the $44.7 billion agricultural economy that supplies nearly half the nation’s seasonal fruits and vegetables. The statement was released at the opening session of ACWA’s statewide Spring Conference & Exhibition in Monterey on May 7.

ACWA Honors Tehama-Colusa Canal Authority with 2014 Clair A. Hill Water Agency Award

Monterey, CA – The Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) today presented the prestigious Clair A. Hill Water Agency Award to the Tehama-Colusa Canal Authority for its fish passage improvement project at the Red Bluff Diversion Dam.
