Update #22 (January 28, 2014) for SBSA’s
48-inch Force Main Reliability Improvement Project:
Unit 1 – Maple Street to Bair Island/Bair Island Road
Maple Street/Docktown Update
As we alerted Maple Street businesses and Docktown residents earlier this month, activity is gearing up.
The first stretch of “noisier” work than usual will start this Friday, January 31 in conjunction with the excavation and pipe installation right near the pump station across from Shelter Network/Sheriff’s facilities. The nosiest work of this phase will take place that first week (starting January 31) but the work at the location will take three weeks.
Beginning in about the second week of February and taking us six months, the shoring for the main open cut excavation and pipeline installation work itself will proceed. There will be three 300-feet segments, and when we are finished with a segment, it will be covered and the roadway access improved. Once the first 300 foot segment is finished, it will cause some traffic control modifications and open up some parking at the Sheriff’s/Work Furlough location. Each time we start a segment, it will require several days of drilling vertical steel beams and be louder than normal construction, as described above, but within the allowable levels for daytime construction.
Bair Island/Bair Island Road Update
Pipe installation at Jacking Shaft #2 located on the property owned by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife near the new pedestrian bridge is scheduled to start on Thursday or Friday. This will insert the 48-inch HDPE carrier pipe inside the casing that was installed through microtunneling. This portion will take about a week and noise levels will be similar to what is being heard right now.
After that, the plan is to insert the pipe from Jacking Shaft #2 to Receiving Shaft #1 location at the east end of the USFWS parking lot off of Bair Island Road. The duration of this work will be to March 31. This will include filling up this jacking shaft hole to the existing ground surface.
Due to a requirement from US Fish & Wildlife, the pipeline project will not be running ANY equipment out on the island from now until February 28, 2014. During this time biologists will be performing a survey to determine if the California Clapper Rail (a wading bird) is mating in the area. There are workers on the island, but not above-ground machinery or vehicles.
That said, the pipeline project is required by regulators to complete the pipe installation and backfill of Jacking Shaft #2 by March 31. The contractor must do everything he can to meet this deadline, therefore, the month of March the crews are working 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, and, possibly some Saturdays.
