Judge Upholds 2003 Colorado River Quantification Settlement Agreement

 

The decade-old pact that apportions the state’s share of water from the Colorado River was upheld in a decision issued this week by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Lloyd G. Connelly.

A set of “coordinated civil cases” had been challenging whether the 2003 Colorado River Quantification Settlement Agreement (QSA) had undergone proper environmental reviews and adheres to the California Environmental Quality Act.

Allocation Partially Restored for Friant District Contractors

The Bureau of Reclamation announced June 5 that after reviewing “better than expected” recent runoff data from the California Department of Water Resources and the National Weather Service, federal officials planned to partially restore some of Friant Division Water Service Contractors water allocation from the Central Valley Project.

Lawsuit Appeals Expanded Critical Habitat for Santa Ana Sucker

A dozen Southern California public agencies followed through this week on their intent to file an appeal regarding an expanded critical habitat designation for the Santa Ana sucker fish.

The lawsuit, filed this week in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals by 12 cities, water districts and a county flood control agency, is asking the court to order the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reevaluate the effect of its decision that doubled the critical habitat area of the threatened fish.

EPA Survey Shows $384 Billion Needed for Drinking Water Infrastructure  
by 2030

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released a survey showing that $384 billion in improvements are needed for the nation’s drinking water infrastructure through 2030 – with $44 billion of that needed in California – in order for the systems to continue to provide safe drinking water to Americans.

Researchers Putting More Snow Sensors in the Sierra

Cheaper sensor technology is bringing to light more information about California’s snowpack as researchers study how climate change will alter the state’s water resources.

Researchers affiliated with the University of California at Merced’s Sierra Nevada Research Institute continue to install more sensor arrays in the mountains, including a project in the American River watershed where 15 nodes are being installed.

Retail Conservation Pricing Workshop Set for June 19 and 26

ACWA, in partnership with the California Urban Water Conservation Council, the Department of Water Resources and others, will co-host two BMP 1.4 Retail Conservation Pricing workshops on June 19 at the West Sacramento Civic Center Galleria, and June 26 at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Los Angeles.

The all-day workshops will include panel discussions and small group listening sessions where participant feedback will be collected.

Pre-Applications for Safe Drinking Water SRF Due July 8

California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is accepting pre-applications through July 8 for funding disbursed through the Safe Drinking Water State Revolving Fund and other state programs.

The 2013 submission period is seeking applicants with projects that correct problems in public water systems. According to CDPH, eligible applicants include community water systems, schools that are public water systems and non-community water systems operated by not-for-profits.
