 Port of Oakland & SEIU Local 1021 to Renew Discussions

Mayor of Oakland helps bring parties together to re-engage so that work can resume at the seaport

Oakland-CA – November 20, 2012 – Oakland Mayor Jean Quan brought the leadership of the Port of Oakland and Service Employees International Union Local 1021 together in an effort to bring get the parties back on a path to contract resolution.

This decision would allow marine terminals in the Oakland seaport to resume operations as early as 7 p.m. this evening. All terminals were closed today due to strike activities. The Port of Oakland and SEIU are still scheduled for fact-finding hearings on November 30 and December 3.

Mayor Jean Quan commended the step: “Both sides need to come together so that the Port can continue being the economic engine of good jobs that we all need it to be.”

Acknowledging the progress, Acting Port Executive Director Deborah Ale Flint stated: “The Port is committed to reaching a mutual agreeable contract, as soon as possible. This important step will allow our marine terminals to reopen for the evening shift, and make sure our truckers and shippers can get their goods to market on time.” 

“We are encouraged that the Port of oakland has agreed to a path that will quickly bring us together. We hope to reach a resolution as soon as possible,” said SEIU Local 1021 President Roxanne Sanchez.
