On Wednesday, August 17, 2016, Bay Planning Coalition (BPC) sent a formal letter to all Bay Area Assemblymembers voicing our opposition to Senate Bill 1387 (SB 1387). The bill, introduced by Senators De León, Allen, and Lara, compromises local control of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). If it passes, it would pose a threat to the representative nature of other regional air quality management districts throughout the state, such as that of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD). BPC values California’s natural environment and efforts to protect it; however, we believe SB 1387 sets a dangerous precedent for the loss of local control on important environmental issues.
