Port of Oakland targets 70 percent local contracting for airport project

Oakland International Airport’s International Arrivals Building to open 2017

Oakland, Calif.–June 8, 2016:  The Port of Oakland has set a 70 percent local hiring goal for a $25 million renovation of the International Arrivals Building at Oakland International Airport. This means local businesses will benefit by receiving $17.5 million in construction project dollars. Small businesses will receive $4.25 million in contracts. The Port of Oakland defines local business as those located within Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Small businesses are those which average $14 million in annual revenues over a three-year period.

“Construction manager Turner Construction and the Port are proud to commit to 70 percent small and local business participation,” said Port of Oakland Director of Social Responsibility Amy Tharpe. “Investing in local firms boosts our regional economy and creates more jobs for local workers.”

Oakland International Airport plans to upgrade its facilities to better handle passenger growth. The renovation project consists of the following:

  • New security screening and Automatic Passport Control kiosk area;
  • Carousel building addition and baggage conveyance replacement;
  • Seismic upgrades including building systems infrastructure upgrades; and
  • Passenger boarding bridge, aircraft parking, and taxi lane modifications.

Through a competitive procurement process, the Port of Oakland selected Turner Construction to be the construction manager for the project. As construction manager, Turner works directly with partnering businesses to handle various aspects of the project.

Turner proposed the 70% commitment to local business which includes a 17% goal for small and very small businesses. The International Arrivals Building is scheduled to be completed in 2017.
