Tall Ships Return to Port for Educational Programs and Public Visits
The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, which are continuing their winter and spring tour of California ports, plan a 12-day stay at the Port of Redwood City. The ships are scheduled to arrive on March 12 and offer public tours and excursions through March 23.
The ships are also accepting reservations from area schools for one-hour and three-hour education programs for K-12 students.
Here’s the ships’ public schedule:
- March 12: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., walk-on tours.
- March 12: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., battle sail.
- March 13: noon to 3 p.m., walk-on tours.
- March 15-18: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., walk-on tours.
- March 16: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., evening sail.
- March 19: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., walk-on tours.
- March 19: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., battle sail.
- March 20: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., battle sail.
- March 20: 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., walk-on tours.
- March 22-23: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., walk-on tours.
- March 23: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., evening sail.

Walk-on tours are a chance to explore the vessels at the dock and speak with the crews. A $3 donation per person is appreciated. A reservation is not required.
Three-hour Battle Sails are recreations of a typical 18th-century style naval skirmish close quarters maneuvers using the same commands and tactics of American warships of the Revolutionary War. Tickets are $39 to $75, depending on age. Evening sails are $35-$45, depending on age. Purchase tickets online (see below) or call 800-200-5239.

The two ships travel together to more than 40 West Coast ports, offering living history programs to young people and adults. Lady Washington was launched in 1989 for Washington State’s centennial celebration. Launched in 1988, Hawaiian Chieftain specializes in K-12 education programs.
The brig Lady Washington embodies American maritime history of the late 1700s and early 1800s. She is a traditionally built replica that has appeared in several movies and television shows.
Hawaiian Chieftain has a fascinating history originating in Hawaii. She’s a swift topsail ketch that has visited Tahiti, the Atlantic Ocean, and once sailed out of Sausalito.
