Water, Wastewater Associations Share Recommendations for Potable Reuse Operator Certification
|

As the state moves forward with feasibility studies and regulations for potable reuse, water and wastewater organizations have taken the initiative to provide recommendations for ensuring qualified personnel will operate advanced treatment facilities. CASA joined the American Water Works Association (CA/NV section), WateReuse CA, the California Water Environment Association and the California Urban Water Agencies to develop a framework for potable reuse operator training and certification.
A joint white paper submitted to the State Water Board’s Division of Drinking Water (DDW) notes that a framework for potable reuse is key to increasing statewide reuse and meeting the state’s goals for increased water recycling. The organizations believe successful training and certification of potable reuse operators is a critical element of a comprehensive program to maintain high quality reuse supplies that are protective of public health. Discussions with DDW and stakeholders regarding the best way to move this concept forward will continue over the next several months. |

“No Drugs Down the Drain” Hits National Media

 CASA participated in a letter to the FDA encouraging the elimination of a list of “acceptable” pharmaceuticals to flush down the toilet. Our position is that no medications should be flushed, and we should instead focus on take-back programs for unused medications. We joined California Product Stewardship Council in drafting this news release to raise awareness of this issue. The news release has been published by multiple media outlets. |

CASA Renewable Resources Expert Contributes to CWEA Article

 CASA’s Director of Renewable Resource Programs, Greg Kester, lent his expertise to California Water Environment Association’s newsletter readers in this article on co-digestion of high-strength organics – an increasingly important topic, as nearly one in five of the state’s treatment facilities are practicing some form of co-digestion, with the trend accelerating.

The State Water Board Office of Sustainable Solutions has published its winter newsletter. A recent EPA survey shows $271 billion is needed for our nation’s wastewater infrastructure. |
