DWR Releases List of High and Medium Priority Groundwater Basins

The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has released a list of unmonitored high and medium priority groundwater basins. As outlined in California’s Water Code, some counties and groundwater management agencies in unmonitored basins may be ineligible for water grants and loans administered by the state.

Outdoor Water Restrictions Already in Place in Many Areas, ACWA Members Report

ACWA member agencies are in various stages of aligning their local conservation measures with new emergency regulations adopted July 15 by the State Water Resources Control Board.

The regulations prohibit certain outdoor water-wasting activities and require water agencies to implement mandatory outdoor water use restrictions as part of their water shortage contingency plans. The regulations also require water agencies to report monthly water production data and, beginning Oct. 15, provide an estimate of per capita water use each month in their service areas.

California Water Use Trends Focus of New PPIC Fact Sheet

The Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) on Tuesday released a fact sheet that outlines the three main sectors of water use in California – environmental, agricultural, and urban – and examines how the water is allocated and reused in those sectors throughout the state.

The PPIC fact sheet also explains that the current drought is exposing major water use challenges, including a failure to manage groundwater sustainably.

Among the findings of the fact sheet:

Bureau of Reclamation Releases New Hydrologic Projections for Contiguous United States

The Bureau of Reclamation today released new hydrologic projections for the contiguous United States. These projections will assist local water managers in making projections about future climate, stream flow and water resources. This new data is derived using the updated World Climate Research Program climate projections.

ACWA’s Tim Quinn Discusses New State Regulations on PBS News Hour

The recent mandatory water restrictions put in place by the state were the topic of an interview on July 16 by Judy Woodruff during the PBS News Hour of Timothy Quinn, ACWA Executive Director and Craig Miller of KQED.

Much of the focus of the interview was on just how serious the drought is and why the regulations are necessary right now.
