What's on the Horizon? No. 3 Banner

Horizon is in full swing. As we count down our remaining days of summer, there are plenty of ways to get involved as Horizon continues to explore a range of challenges and opportunities that the Bay Area is likely to face between now and 2050.

Share Your BIG IDEAS for Transportation

Central Subway

You say you have a real (transportation) solution? There’s still time to share your ideas for Transformative Projects that will change the way we move around the Bay Area. Help us create a regional vision for a next-generation transportation system—submissions are due September 6 via the online application form.
The Request for Transformative Projects is open to anyone with BIG, bright, billion-dollar (or more) ideas for improving connectivity and mobility in the region. Staff will review each submission, and proposals will be considered for further analysis as part of the Horizon initiative. Finalists will be selected in October 2018 and will have the opportunity to win a $500 grand prize.
Catch Transformative Projects making headlines in the East Bay Times and on ABC 7 News.
2050 and Beyond

Horizon Video

In July, three proposed futures were presented at the MTC Planning Committee meeting and ABAG Executive Board meeting. These widely divergent futures, which will be studied through the Horizon process, were designed to test and identify strategies and investments that are most effective across multiple futures. Each future is framed to answer a central “what if” question:
  • Clean and Green – what if new technologies and a national carbon tax enabled telecommuting and distributed job centers?
  • Rising Tides, Falling Fortunes – what if the federal government cuts spending and reduces regulations, leaving more policy decisions to states and regions?
  • Back to the Future – what if an economic boom and new transportation options spur a new wave of development?

With these futures now finalized, staff has started the first round of travel and land use modeling, exploring what would happen to the Bay Area if status quo policies are enacted in the face of the unique forces at play in each future.
