Port Gives $70,000 to Develop Eco-Jobs Workforce

The Port of Oakland has given $70,000 to Rising Sun Energy Center, a local non-profit to prepare local workers for careers in the environmental construction trades. Rising Sun Energy Center has a track record of helping low-income adults secure jobs in the construction, energy efficiency, and solar industries. The grant will address the need for future labor needs related to Port development projects. 
 
A Farewell to our 2018 Summer Interns!

As the summer winds down, it is time to say farewell to our interns! The Port of Oakland and Oakland International Airport appreciate all of their hard-work and contributions. At the appreciation luncheon, interns shared their experience with staff and learnings from the “brown bag series” on Aviation, Commercial Real Estate, and Maritime. Interns also showcased their capstone project with a new blog they created for future interns to help them navigate through their employment at the Port of Oakland.
 
 
Community Day Festival and Harbor Tour

The Port recognized the tremendous work being done in the local community with our 2nd Annual Community Day Festival and Harbor Tour. The festival is an occasion to thank our community partners and recognize the work we do together in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Over 20 organizations participated in the festivities that included live music by Oaktown Jazz Workshop, Prescott Circus Theatre, and a sunset Harbor Tour of the Oakland Seaport.
 
 
Path to Emissions-Free Cargo Operations

The Port of Oakland announced that it has embarked on a path to emissions-free cargo operations. The ambitious target is at the heart of a draft air quality improvement plan that was sent out for public review June 29. It calls for reducing criteria pollutants and greenhouse gases at Oakland’s seaport. Update on the West Oakland Truck Management Plan

The fourth West Oakland Truck Management Plan (TMP) Community Workshop was held on Wednesday, July 18 at the West Oakland Senior Center. The public provided their input on prioritizing the presented potential solutions. Visit the TMP website for more information about the workshops, including meeting materials, and Potential Solutions posters. Please contact Patricia McGowan, City of Oakland, at pmcgowan@oaklandca.gov or Andrea Gardner, Port of Oakland,agardner@portoakland.com if you would like to provide input on the potential solutions. Community Workshop Five will be held in the Fall/Winter of 2018. 
 
Port of Oakland Employees Scholarship Fund
Awards $32,000 to Local Students

The Port of Oakland Employees’ Scholarship Program awarded $32,000 to 12 Alameda County high school graduates. The amounts ranged from $1,500 to $3,000 for students entering a trade, junior college and university. The Executive Director award of $5,000 was given to Edwin Burgos Perez from Coliseum College Prep Academy. For the 24th consecutive year, Port employees volunteered and donated money to raise scholarship funds for local students. Total scholarships to date amount to $921,000 to 282 high school graduates.
 
Jack London Square’s 4th of July Block Party

More than 10,000 people celebrated Independence Day at Jack London Square’s 4th of July Block Party. The block party featured live music, tasty backyard BBQ, local shopping, and the Port’s photo booth. Everyone enjoyed taking a free photo with friends and family.
 
Youth Voices for Our Communities and the Environment

The Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment led another successful program of the Summer Climate Justice Youth Leadership Academy where 16 students learned about environmental justice training and leadership development over six weeks. In June, these New Voices students experienced marine terminal operations and learned about clean air technologies at the Port of Oakland.
 
 
Port of Oakland Receives Deep Roots Award

Oakland’s Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce awarded the Port of Oakland with the Deep Roots Award at the 112th Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon. The award honors a local company or individual that has been a major contributor to Oakland.
 
Attitudinal Healing’s West Oakland Legacy and Leadership Project

Students from Attitudinal Healing’s West Oakland Legacy and Leadership Project (WOLP) presented their superheros artwork to the Board of Port Commissioners. The students described how each superhero would use their superpower to address environmental concerns and strengthen the community in West Oakland. For more information, visit the WOLP website

Volunteer for California Coastal Cleanup Day!

Join us for our annual 2018 California Coastal Cleanup Day at East Creek Slough on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm or Middle Harbor Shoreline Park from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. 
 
Volunteers will help cleanup trash and debris to beautify our local waterways.
