The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) are still collecting BIG ideas for transportation in the Bay Area, and we want to hear from you!
The Request for Transformative Projects, part of MTC and ABAG’s Horizon initiative, is a unique opportunity to reshape Bay Area transportation as we know it – and help us create a regional vision for a next-generation transportation system.
Share your Transformative Project by completing the online application form. All submissions are due by September 6, 2018.
What Counts as a Transformative Project?
The Request for Transformative Projects is focused on major investments that were not assessed previously in Plan Bay Area 2040. Ideas could include visionary transportation projects, like the second Transbay Tube or the Central Subway extension, as well as new ideas, such as a network of aerial trams or a new hyperloop line, to solve the challenges of today and tomorrow.
Projects that meet any of the following criteria should be submitted during the Request for Transformative Projects:
- Transit projects that improve capacity, frequency or coverage; have a lifecycle cost exceeding $1 billion; AND were not evaluated in Plan Bay Area 2040
- Roadway projects that improve capacity, have a lifecycle cost exceeding $1 billion AND were not evaluated in Plan Bay Area 2040
- Infrastructure projects that make existing transportation infrastructure more resilient to rising sea levels or seismic hazards [no cost threshold]
- Operational strategies with transformative regional impacts, such as all-lane tolling or transit fare simplification [no cost threshold]
Submissions will be evaluated for their cost-effectiveness and support ofHorizon’s five Guiding Principles. Questions on the application form will ask you to select the type of project and to describe the project in more detail.
Five to 10 innovative ideas will be considered for further analysis as part of the Horizon initiative, and finalists will be announced in October 2018. In 2019, these projects may even be considered for inclusion in Plan Bay Area 2050’s investment strategy.
