FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CALIFORNIA NEWSPAPERS, LARGE AND SMALL, CONTINUE TO URGE READERS TO VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 53
SACRAMENTO – The cascade of endorsements by California newspapers large and small urging No on Proposition 53 continues this week with the Chico Enterprise-Record, Santa Maria Times, San Francisco Guardian and the Lompoc Record joining the state’s other major newspapers in urging their readers to defeat the ballot measure that attacks local control and contains no exemptions for natural disasters and emergencies
“Analysts say the overall fiscal effects of (Prop 53) passage are unknown, which to us is an unacceptable risk,” wrote the Lompoc Record editorial board. “We recommend a ‘no’ vote.”
“There are enough red flags in the proposition to recommend its rejection,” notes the Chico-Enterprise Record. “Does anyone think voters in the rest of the state would approve a toll road in Riverside County that they’ll never use, or a bridge that’s damaged in a Bay Area earthquake, or a Sites Reservoir? It’s not likely, and that’s one reason we don’t like the proposition.”
The newspapers join the state’s other major newspapers in opposing Proposition 53. They include:
· The Los Angeles Times
· Sacramento Bee
· San Diego Union-Tribune
· San Francisco Chronicle
· San Jose Mercury News
· East Bay Times
· Bakersfield Californian
· Santa Rosa Press Democrat
· Santa Cruz Sentinel
· Ventura County Star
· Monterey Herald
Almost 300 organizations across the state representing local government, public safety, water, business, labor, agriculture, educators and more are opposing Prop 53.
