Senate leaders strike deal on WRDA; bill poised for passage

A $9 billion measure authorizing a slew of clean water and river navigation projects appeared poised for Senate approval within days, as leaders agreed on a plan to limit amendments last night.

After seemingly stalling earlier this week, the two-year Water Resources Development Act, S. 2848, quickly advanced to the front of the Senate’s agenda, giving leaders an opportunity to pass legislation popular with Democrats and Republicans alike.

“We have once again proven we can get this done,” said Environment and Public Works ranking member Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), who crafted the measure with Chairman Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.).

Senate leaders agreed to limit amendments to those approved by both Inhofe and Boxer, and Inhofe said he would accept them until noon tomorrow, an indication that the bill will likely carry into next week.
