Sharks of the Bay
Exploring Myths and Realities of the Sharks of San Francisco Bay
White sharks visit and feed in San Francisco Bay. The recent spectacular sighting near Alcatraz Island has been covered extensively in the news, but did you know that over 7 other shark species regularly feed, breed, and inhabit the Bay? Join shark experts Michael Grassman (Aquarium of the Bay) and David McGuire (Shark Stewards) for discussion about the sharks of the Bay based on the most up-to-date science from shark tagging and other scientific studies. Learn the myths and realities about local sharks and why they play a critical role in the Bay and ocean ecosystem. This enthralling event will include photography of sharks and a fascinating short film titled City of the Shark. Brian Baird (The Bay Institute) will moderate a question and answer period following the presentations. This program is being conducted in collaboration with a collective of ocean non-profits celebrating sharks via Sharktober events occuring throughout the City, along with Blue Drinks Bay Area.
