113th Congress Addresses Arctic Maritime Transportation Needs

On December 18, 2014, President Obama signed into law the Howard Coble Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act of 2014 (CGMTA). The Act authorized just over $8.7 billion in fiscal year 2015 appropriations for the Coast Guard, while reducing the service’s active duty strength from 47,000 to 43,000. It includes authority for the Coast Guard to enter into multiyear contracts to procure the new class of Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) – requiring that some of the planned 25 OPCs be capable of operating in sea state 5 – and called for a plan to decommission the service’s fourteen remaining 210 foot Reliance-class medium endurance cutters not later than 2029… MORE
