Integral Consulting Inc. welcomes Bridgette DeShields to its San Francisco-area office as a Principal Scientist. Ms. DeShields will expand the firm’s services in California, assisting clients in regulatory strategy, site investigation, site remediation, risk assessment, sediment and water quality management, and environmental toxicology.

“Bridgette brings our clients first-hand knowledge and excellent working relationships with regulatory staff in California,” said Integral Principal and Regional Director
Ed Conti. “Her expertise in project management, sediment management, and in navigating California regulatory and permitting programs will aid clients in regulatory compliance and litigation support. We are thrilled to have her join our consulting team.”

With a strong reputation for technical excellence and leadership in the field of sediment and environmental management, Ms. DeShields brings more than 25 years of experience in managing programs ranging from large site investigations to screening and quantitative ecological and human health risk assessments. She has managed environmental investigations, remedial action planning, and development of remedial alternatives for numerous sites, including industrial facilities, waterfront properties, a former sawmill, a former paper mill, and several military installations. She also has expertise in permitting, ecological and natural resource assessments, and environmental assessments.

Ms. DeShields’ work has focused on sediment assessments and waterfront projects with natural resource components and complex regulatory frameworks. She has performed human health and ecological risk assessments of contaminated sediments for various clients, conducted environmental review of potential contamination and permitting for construction and retrofit projects, and designed and managed port dredging programs.

With considerable expertise in environmental toxicology, her professional interests also include research on the distribution and potential effects of metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and petroleum contaminants in sediment and surface water, and bioaccumulation and bioavailability assessments to evaluate potential impacts to aquatic receptors, amphibians, birds, mammals, and plants potentially exposed to chemicals. She has particular expertise in assessing metals bioavailability in both upland and aquatic settings.

Among her many accomplishments, she serves as chair of the San Francisco Bay Regional Monitoring Program’s Technical Review Committee, representing the Western States Petroleum Association and the interests of all the Bay Area refineries regarding San Francisco Bay water and sediment quality issues.

Ms. DeShields holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis, and earned her M.S. in Environmental Management from the University of San Francisco. She is a member of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, the Bay Planning Coalition, and the Western Dredging Association.
