In accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the Port of Oakland (Port) is preparing an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to evaluate the potential widening of Oakland’s turning basins. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), in partnership with the Port, is performing a feasibility study to improve the efficiency of vessels entering and exiting the Oakland Harbor. The Oakland Harbor Turning Basins Widening (Proposed Project) proposes to increase the width of the Port’s two existing turning basins to accommodate a vessel with a capacity of 19,000 TEU and a length of 1,310 feet. The Proposed Project will also require federal approval under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Pursuant to NEPA, the USACE, as the federal lead agency, released the draft Environmental Assessment on December 17, 2022.
