Bay Planning Coalition Names Michael J. Giari as 2018 Frank C. Boerger Award Recipient
Outgoing Director of Port of Redwood City to be recognized as part of BPC’s Spring Summit event in Oakland on May 11
Oakland, CA – (April 25, 2018): Bay Planning Coalition (BPC) is pleased to announce that Michael (Mike) J. Giari, Executive Director for the Port of Redwood City (the Port), will receive the 2018 Frank C. Boerger Award at BPC’s signature annual Spring Summit on May 11 at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center.
The Frank C. Boerger Award, named after a founding director of BPC, is given each year to an individual who appreciates the rigors of advocating environmental protection and economic progress, and forges a path to achieve both. The recipient is a person who is passionate in their convictions, balanced in their judgment, and talented in bringing diverse interests and stakeholders together.
A true Bay Area native, Mr. Giari’s port-related career began with the U.S. Maritime Administration in San Francisco. Since then, Mr. Giari has developed an extensive and distinguished career in port management. Between 1981 and 1988, Mr. Giari worked for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as Assistant Manager of a major waterfront development project and as a marine transportation planner. He joined the Port of Redwood City in 1988 as Manager of Trade Development and was later appointed to Executive Director in 1995. Mr. Giari has been instrumental in helping the Port grow since his appointment. Tripled tonnage across Port docks, new businesses, modernized Port facilities, and improved waterfront recreation facilities and opportunities for the community are just a few of the many achievements Mr. Giari helped oversee during his 23 years as Executive Director. Earlier this year, Mr. Giari announced his retirement and will be leaving the Port in May.
BPC further recognizes Mr. Giari for his contributions to BPC as a board director and past president. Serving on the board for over 15 years, Mr. Giari has been an integral part of BPC’s development and success in advancing the organization’s mission and vision. BPC deeply thanks Mr. Giari for his years of service, and looks forward to working with his successor and continuing our strong partnership with the Port.
John A. Coleman, Chief Executive Officer of BPC, states, “Mike has successfully made the Port of Redwood City what it is today. With Mike’s vision, the Port has literally helped to build Silicon Valley from the ground up. Much of our region’s economic success is because of Mike and his team at the Port of Redwood City.”
Mr. Giari responds, “I am very grateful to Bay Planning Coalition for honoring me with this award. BPC has been a contributor to the Port of Redwood City’s success through its strong advocacy of environmentally sound and reasonable dredging practices and regulations. I hope that I have been able to contribute in small ways to the important work of BPC.”
Mr. Giari is the 17th recipient of the Frank C. Boerger Award. Past recipients include Alexis Strauss, Will Travis, Jack Broadbent, Monique Moyer, Congressman John Garamendi, and Sam Schuchat.
