NO ON PROP 53 CAMPAIGN GETS BOOST FROM GOVERNOR BROWN, BROAD COALITION
AND EDITORIAL SUPPORT ON ELECTION EVE
SACRAMENTO – As voters head to the polls next tomorrow, the No on 53 campaign continues to ride a wave of momentum.
“Voters understand that Prop 53 takes away local control and will increase the costs of roads, bridges and hospitals,” said Lou Paulson, President of California Professional Firefighters, which has endorsed the No on 53 campaign. “The increasingly wide opposition to Prop 53 continues to grow as they continue to discover how detrimental this measure will be to our communities, particularly since it has no exemptions for emergencies nor disasters.”
During the final week of the campaign prior to election day, Gov. Edmund Brown Jr. held press conferences in three of the state’s largest cities (Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego). The Governor also is featured in television and radio ads across the state. Television ads featuring firefighters and emergency officials warning of the dangers of Prop 53 are airing throughout the state as well as on social media.
Nearly every major newspaper in the state is also urging their readers to reject Prop 53, including the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee, Fresno Bee, and La Opinion. More than 50 other newspapers also urged its readers to vote No on 53.
In addition, the No on 53 has a broad coalition of more than 350 organizations from throughout the state. They include organizations that don’t always agree, but that are united in opposition to Prop 53. The California Chamber of Commerce, California Labor Federation, League of California Cities, California Nurses Association, and the California League of Conservation Voters are all No on 53. Local supporters from these groups held press conferences in Fresno, Bakersfield and Santa Barbara in the past week.
“Voting no on Prop 53 has brought together a unique alliance of groups from all parts of the political and ideological spectrum that typically do not agree on major issues,” notes Robbie Hunter, president of the State Building & Construction Trades Council of California. “Prop 53 will be a disaster for communities, our ability to respond to emergencies and disasters, and to build the infrastructure we need to meet the future demands of population growth in the State of California.”
