Port Reports  Cargo Movement Third Highest in Past 10 Years

Cargo moving across the docks at the Port of Redwood City tonnage declined slightly by five percent for the fiscal year that ended June 30.  However, the total tonnage was the third highest at the Port over the past 10 years at 1,637,682 metric tons.  This reflects the continuing strong demand for construction materials in Silicon Valley and the South Bay, particularly the high quality sand and aggregates shipped to the Port from British Columbia.

Approximate percentage breakdowns by commodities: imported sand 45.5%, imported aggregates 29.4%, exported scrap metal 14.2%; bauxite ore 4.2%; gypsum rock 4.4%; domestic sand 1.8%, and ground iron slag 0.5%.

“The high quality for construction of the sand and gravel aggregates from British Columbia combined with the dwindling supply of these materials in Northern California because quarries are unable to expand, triggered a strong demand from which the Port benefited,” said Executive Director Michael J. Giari.

The sand and  aggregates, used in the production of concrete, arrive at the Port by ships with self-unloading conveyor systems owned by Canadian Steamship Lines. Eagle Rock Aggregates is the supplier of these high quality construction aggregates. The company operates the Orca Quarry, located on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, BC, which has a very high quality
