San Francisco, California, <April 27, 2016> – A crimson bridge, a sparkling bay and quaint waterfront towns – California-based Moffatt & Nichol has touched nearly every part of the San Francisco Bay since 1947 when the firm was asked to help expand the City of San Francisco’s eastern waterfront at Mission Rock. Fast forward to 2016, the firm continues to shape the Bay Area’s future. Some of the firm’s most recent, notable projects include restoring the region’s wetland habitats including Bair Island, Cullinan Ranch, Sears Point, and crafting innovative strategies for major portions of the former salt ponds in the South Bay.

Known as the premier port, coastal, maritime, and waterfront engineering firm, the firm helped develop ferry terminals at San Francisco and Oyster Point, and is now working on developing or improving ferry terminals at Treasure Island, Downtown San Francisco, Sausalito, and Larkspur. As the Bay Area sees a resurgence of its waterfront, the firm has also become instrumental in redeveloping Treasure Island, Hunters Point, Mission Rock, and Pier 70, including crafting creative and practical strategies to deal with climate change.

Despite the firm’s lengthy coastal and waterfront resume, one project stands out from the rest – the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge East Span. As part of a joint venture, the firm provided engineering services for the iconic 2.2-mile-long eastern portion of the Bay Bridge replacement. Completed in 2013, the project has won numerous awards for its innovative features, advanced earthquake technology, and ability to accommodate future expansions in light rail, bus and other transportation modes. The project began decades ago under the leadership of former President and CEO, Robert ‘Bob’ Nichol, who passed away in March 2016. Bob helped expand the firm’s presence from California to Latin America to Europe and beyond. Today, the firm continues to provide turnkey services for projects where land meets water.
