Voters Approve Proposition 1 by Decisive Margin

California voters approved Proposition 1 by a substantial margin Tuesday, authorizing $7.545 billion in funding for a range of water projects and programs as part of a new era in water management.

Election returns posted by the Secretary of State’s office showed Proposition 1 winning by a 66.8%-33.2% margin as of 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, the largest margin for a water bond in recent times.

Gov. Jerry Brown, who campaigned for Propositions 1 and 2 and made their passage a top priority, hailed the success of both measures in remarks to reporters Tuesday night.

State Board Reports Per Capita Water Use Figures for Urban Agencies

The State Water Resources Control Board today released first-ever monthly estimates of daily per capita water use by residential customers for nearly 400 urban agencies around the state.

Water Experts to Discuss Mono Lake During Nov. 17 Symposium

The UC Berkeley School of Law along with stakeholders in Mono Lake will convene a symposium in Sacramento on Nov. 17 to mark the 20th anniversary of the State Water Resources Control Board’s decision to integrate the Water Code, Fish and Game Code and the common law of public trust to protect the lake and its tributary creeks.

ACWA is a co-sponsor of the symposium.

Higher Food Prices, Drought Water Bank Possible if 2015 is Dry, Water Officials Tell State Board of Food and Ag

From a potential drought water bank to increased food prices and assistance for unemployed farmworkers, water planners on the local, state and federal levels are gearing up for a possible dry 2015.

That was the overview delivered today by water officials from many agencies who appeared before the California State Board of Food and Agriculture to discuss how another dry year might impact groundwater, agriculture, food prices, and water system operations. The discussion was part of a briefing on plans for 2015.

Sacramento Region Reports 17% Cut in Water Use

The Regional Water Authority (RWA) today reported that the Sacramento region reduced its September water use by 17% over last year’s figures. Additionally, RWA well monitoring data shows a 9% reduction in groundwater pumping compared to 2013, despite increased reliance on groundwater resources due to the drought.

DWR Releases Updated California Water Plan

After five years of preparation and significant input from stakeholders, the California Department of Water Resources today released its updated California Water Plan which places significant emphasis on integrated regional water management and multi-agency collaboration.

IRWM Stakeholder Workshops

The California Department of Water Resources will sponsor several workshops throughout the state Nov. 6 that are intended to provide tools and resources to Integrated Regional Water Management stakeholders.

The workshops will have a particular focus on the needs of tribes, disadvantaged communities and local agencies, but all IRWM stakeholders are welcome. The workshop will be held simultaneously from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Redding, Stockton, Clovis, and Los Angeles. A webcast session, as well as on-site interactive sessions at each location also will be held.
