EPA Water Rule Comment Period Extended
By Philip Brasher, CQ Roll Call
The Obama administration is extending the public comment period on its much-debated Clean Water Act rule until after the election. The deadline had been Oct. 20 but is now being postponed until Nov. 14.
In a statement , the EPA said Monday that the later deadline would provide time for comment on a study of the connectivity of streams and wetlands. The agency’s scientific advisory board will shortly finish its peer review of the study, the EPA said.
Last week, the 52-member board approved a four-page letter that generally supports the rule but suggests it should be written more broadly in some ways.
The proposed rule defines what streams, wetlands and other bodies of water are regulated under the law ( PL 95-217 ).
