Here are two newly confirmed speakers for the seminar:
 Joel Valenzuela, Executive VP of Operations, Port of San Diego
Mr. Valenzuela directs the operations, maintenance, and development of the Port’s maritime facilities and infrastructure including the cargo and cruise terminals, public piers, wharves and docks and he has been named Director of Maritime Operations. Previously the Department Manager of Maritime Industry and Trade Relations, Joel is a certified Professional Port Manager, having completed extensive training through the American Association of Port Authorities. In addition to his career with the Port’s Maritime Division, Mr. Valenzuela also served as a project analyst in the Port’s Executive Offices. In this role, he prepared budgets and performed economic, financial and qualitative analyses of organizational issues. He holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University.
Lisa Loftus-Otway, Research Engineer/Scientist, University of Texas at Austin Center for Transportation Research
Lisa Loftus-Otway is a Transportation Researcher with extensive experience in transportation law and policy, freight planning, public-private partnerships, and sustainable development. With expertise in land use conflicts surrounding port and freight issues, she participated in a focus panel providing advice to the Federal Rail Administration on land use around rail for the development of the National Rail Plan. Lisa is a registered attorney with degrees from University of Texas at Austin, the University of Nottingham, and London Guildhall University.
The seminar begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes at 3:00 p.m. at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Old Town San Diego, conveniently located near the San Diego International Airport (complimentary shuttle service provided), so you can easily fly in and out of San Diego that same day. | APP PEOPLE: EGOSCUE JOINS PORT OF LONG BEACH HARBOR COMMISSION AND APP EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE |
 Environmental attorney and Long Beach resident Tracy Egoscue joined the Port of Long Beach, California USA Board of Harbor Commissioners on September 16 as the first Commissioner appointed by Mayor Robert Garcia. She was approved by the Long Beach City Council for a six-year term. Egoscue was also chosen by the Port of Long Beach to serve on the APP Executive Committee as a Regional Representative.Egoscue heads a Long Beach-based private law practice. Previously she was Executive Officer of the California Regional Water Quality Control Board – Los Angeles Region, and prior to that served as Executive Director of Santa Monica Baykeeper, an environmental advocacy group. She has also practiced environmental litigation as a Deputy Attorney General for the California Department of Justice, and worked on issues encompassing the Air Resources Board, the California Environmental Quality Act and the Federal Clean Water Act.
She is the 67th Long Beach Harbor Commissioner since the current structure was set in 1925, and the seventh woman to serve on the Board. Egoscue fills a seat vacated by the departure in July of Susan E. Anderson Wise, whose term ended. Wise is also an attorney.
“The Port is so important to the City. While its operations impact our community, we are also very proud of what the Port has done. The Port of Long Beach is a leader environmentally, not just nationally, but internationally, and I look forward to continuing that,” Egoscue said. “I bring a perspective that I hope the Commission will find useful.”
Egoscue serves on the Board of Directors of the California League of Conservation Voters and Mujeres de la Tierra, a nonprofit environmental justice organization. She received her law degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and her B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is a member of the State Bar of California and is also licensed to practice in Connecticut.

| PORT OF HUENEME REPORTS RECORD INTERNATIONAL TRADE YEAR |
 The Port of Hueneme, California USA experienced its highest international trade year in its 77-year history and its second highest year for domestic and international freight combined. The benchmark year included a 30% increase in auto exports. The total tonnage for the 2013-14 fiscal year came in at a strong 1,438,596 metric tons representing a less than 1% decrease from last year’s all-time high.Hueneme Port Commission President and APP First Vice President Mary Anne Rooney said, “The success of the Port ties directly to our community and strategic partners at the Port. Together we are creating jobs and building a better future for the citizens of the Port, the community and the region.”
Strong growth in freight activity was seen in the Port’s niche markets of automobiles, high and heavy cargoes, fresh produce, fertilizer, and domestic commodities. Automobile imports boasted a robust 7.1% increase over last fiscal year while exports exploded by 31% over 2013 scoring the second best year on record. A large percentage of the export increase was driven by more foreign manufacturers such as Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Acura operating from new facilities within the United States and sending their U.S. manufactured autos to the Asian market.
Hueneme’s banana imports remained strong at 655,589 metric tons. Other fresh fruits and vegetables handled by Port customers grew by 1.6%. According to Del Monte’s Port manager Chuck Caulkins, “Del Monte continues to perform strongly for the Port and with the uptick in the economy we remain hopeful that the business climate in California will recognize the importance of international trade for job creation and economic development.”
Other customers of the Port include Yara North America Inc, who manages the liquid bulk fertilizer and Air1 Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), a high purity solution of urea in water used to chemically reduce NOx emissions from trucks, buses and other units powered by diesel engines.
Port CEO and Executive Director Kristin Decas remarked on some of the core reasons for the Port’s steady growth, “This year’s cargo performance sets a new milestone for the Port. This achievement is driven by our customers and business development team. We’re committed to continuing our partnerships and strategic planning to maximize the social and economic benefit the Port brings to our community and industries.”
