Navigating the New Millennium
The U.S. Section of PIANC proudly welcomed over 760 attendees to the 33rd PIANC World Congress in the beautiful city of San Francisco, California. The Congress is held every four years in one of PIANC’s member countries in order to present and discuss topics relevant to the waterborne transport infrastructure sector.
Hosting a PIANC Congress is nearly a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ event, and the last time the U.S. had this honor was in 1961 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Latin American Congress Members Exchange Ideas / Iniciativa Latinoamericana
At the close of the first day of the PIANC World Congress, there was a spirited and informative meeting with Latin American Congress members as they exchanged ideas and identified the critical needs of the navigation sector in Latin America while brainstorming opportunities available through PIANC to help address those needs. Collectively, the group felt that professional development (training and development); technical support, and collaboration with PIANC should be given the highest priorities, and PIANC has already begun following up with them.

Oakland A’s Baseball Game Highlights
AGA Delegates and guests were invited to attend an Oakland Athletic’s (A’s) baseball game on Sunday, June 1. Hosted by the U.S. Section, with The Honorable Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works), as the chief fan and baseball aficionado, attendees watched the game from a private BBQ Terrace off right field. For many, this was their first time experiencing America’s national pastime and they got into the spirit by proudly sporting their “First Game” pins, A’s hats and foam fingers!

PIANC USA 2013 Section Report
The PIANC USA Section Report in the annual PIANC Yearbook is a highlight of the past year’s national activities. The report lists PIANC USA leadership and representatives along with the major PIANC events of 2013. Notable events and occurrences from this past year include the passing of LTG Elvin R. (Vald) Heiberg III (1932-2013), the U.S. Army’s 46th Chief of Engineers; two U.S. Commission meetings; the AGA award to PIANC leader Dr. Robert Engler; the Obama Administration award to the Port of Pittsburgh Commission’s Executive Director, James R. McCarville, as a “Transportation Champion of Change”; a “Kick-Off” Event to support this year’s PIANC World Congress; the 2013 ASCE-COPRI Ports Conference; and a renewed partnership between the Organisation of American States (OAS) Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) and PIANC USA.

YP and Student Participation at Congress
More than 160 Young Professionals attended the Congress that welcomed over 760 participants. More than 20 % of the participants were Young Professionals — representing 38 countries from a total of 46 represented countries for the entire event. Thanks to all the YPs for being so active! But even more important, thanks to everybody within the PIANC community for supporting us. We really appreciate it and without your help this would not be possible!

The Honorable Jo-Ellen Darcy and Others Inducted into Academy
The Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port & Navigation Engineers (ACOPNE) held its 12th Induction Ceremony as part of the 33rd PIANC World Congress. It took place on the evening of Thursday, June 5, 2014 and was held near the exhibit hall of the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. The Honorable Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works) was among the inductees.
