Another Example of CEQA Misuse:

Netflix Campus Expansion, Los Gatos

CEQA Working Group Coalition:

Today we’ve released the eighth case study in our weekly series profiling examples of misuses of CEQA: Netflix Campus Expansion, Los Gatos.

In 2011 the Los Gatos Business Park, LLC received approval to redevelop an old business park which would include 550,000 square feet of office space and 168 units of senior housing. The Netflix campus is located just across the highway, and at that time was looking for a new site to expand its campus, making this the ideal location. A local neighborhood group, however, was concerned about aesthetics of the business park redevelopment project (a non-environmental motivation), and filed a CEQA lawsuit in an attempt to stop it.The ultimate project design eliminated the senior housing component altogether and reduced the overall size. The lawsuit caused costly delays and due to the smaller size, the creation of fewer jobs.
