Port of Redwood City’s PortFest Wins Industry Award
The Port of Redwood City’s annual “PortFest” has been awarded a special recognition by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), to be presented Oct. 24th at its 101st annual convention in Mobile, Alabama.
AAPA is honoring the Port for its entry in “special events,” competing against ports from through the U.S., Canada, Latin America, and Caribbean, including many larger ports.
One judge asserted that PortFest “itself is very massive and includes events for all members of the family.”
Port Commissioner Lorianna Kastrop initially spearheaded PortFest to raise public awareness of the Port and to showcase the working and recreational Port waterfront.
“PortFest is designed to educate visitors about the many direct benefits the Port provides, as an economic engine for the local economy and City of Redwood City, as a source of high-wage blue-collar jobs, a generator of foreign waterborne trade, and an access point for on-the-water recreation,” Kastrop said.
PortFest also “supports the education community so that young children in the area are exposed to the fact that maritime trade is essential to the economic well-being of the local and national economy, while teaching them to have pride in their city’s maritime heritage,” Kastrop added.
The third annual PortFest was held October 6 at the Port and was co-sponsored by the Redwood City Education Foundation.
